Dust Extractors and Why You Should Be Using One

Whether you're hand filing or using an eFile, a Dust Extractor or Dust Collector is an essential for any nail technician.

By using a dust extractor you will reduce the amount of dust you breathe in every day.
There are two different types of dust that can become harmful to you as a nail technician:
Inhalable dust - These particles range from below 1 micron to 100 microns.

Respirable dust - These particles are below 10 microns and are invisible to the naked eye.

Airborne particle sizes | LP Dust Extractor

To give you an idea, a single strand of human hair ranges from around 80 to 100 microns, so these dust particles are pretty small.

Fine dust may also contain other things, like chemicals absorbed from nail polish or glue. And, in the case of artificial nails, there would be particles of acrylic as well.

Many allergies are developed from uncured product dust coming into contact with the skin. This can affect both you and your clients. Using a dust extractor will dramatically reduce the risk of overexposure.

Even though larger particles of dust generally can’t make it beyond your nose, these finer dust particles can find their way into your respiratory passage and even into your lungs, and affect how they function.

Prolonged exposure can lead to hypersensitivity to dust (which results in difficulty in breathing), chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), and even occupational asthma.

There is also the issue of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, which, if they get in your air passage or your lungs, could cause an infection.

As a result, many nail technicians are at higher risk of developing breathing conditions, such as occupational asthma or even cancer. Nail dust can also settle get into the eyes, causing sores and irritations.
